Ranked: Who Drew the Champions League Short Straw This Round of 16?

The Champions League round of 16 is here, and the draw did absolutely no one any favours. Eight ties, zero easy nights. Whether you’re watching from a pub in Manchester, a living room in Madrid, or a bar in Newcastle still pinching yourself that Barcelona are coming to town — this is the week the real tournament begins.

We’ve ranked every tie from “could be worse” to “absolute football nightmare” — with a bit of history, a bit of chaos, and a lot of opinions your mates will argue about.

8. Bodø/Glimt vs Sporting CP — The One Everyone’s Sleeping On

Let’s be honest — most casual fans scrolled past this tie. But don’t. Bodø/Glimt, the tiny Norwegian club from above the Arctic Circle, have become legitimate Champions League disruptors. Sporting, meanwhile, are a side packed with technical quality and European pedigree. This is the tie that’ll produce the result nobody saw coming — and the Reddit thread that goes viral at 2am.

The short straw rating: 3/10 — relatively the most manageable draw in the round, but “manageable” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

7. Galatasaray vs Liverpool

On paper, Liverpool should be booking their quarter-final hotel. In reality? Galatasaray beat them in the league phase, the atmosphere at the RAMS Park is one of the most hostile in world football, and Arne Slot’s side have shown they’re beatable on the road this season. Liverpool fans are nervous. They should be — at least a little.

The short straw rating: 5/10 — winnable, but there’s a ghost of Istanbul in the air.

6. Atlético Madrid vs Tottenham

Under normal circumstances, Atlético Madrid vs a top-six Premier League side is a coin flip. These are not normal circumstances. Spurs are one point above the relegation zone, playing under a manager who’s lost every game in charge, with a dressing room that reportedly wants him gone. Atlético, under Simeone, will make this the most miserable 90 minutes of football imaginable. The only upside for Spurs fans? At least they’re still in Europe. For now.

The short straw rating: 6/10 — would be fine for a functional Spurs. Brutal for this Spurs.

5. Newcastle vs Barcelona

THIS IS FINE. Newcastle United — a club that was nearly extinct financially not long ago — hosting Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16. The Magpies have genuinely earned their place here, and with St James’ Park rocking, anything is possible in the first leg. But Barcelona, led by Hansi Flick and boasting one of the most exciting young attacks in Europe, are a genuine title contender. Newcastle will need every bit of their home support — and then some.

The short straw rating: 6/10 — dream occasion, nightmare opponent.

4. Leverkusen vs Arsenal

Bayer Leverkusen vs Arsenal is the kind of tie that gets football nerds genuinely giddy. Two of the most tactically interesting managers in Europe, two high-press, high-tempo teams, and a fixture dripping with storylines. Leverkusen ended Arsenal’s Europa League campaign on their way to last season’s Bundesliga title. Arsenal will remember that. This is tightly balanced, deeply tactical, and likely to be decided by fine margins.

The short straw rating: 7/10 — genuinely 50/50, which is the most stressful possible answer.

3. Atalanta vs Bayern Munich

Atalanta are everyone’s favourite Champions League underdog story — and they are absolutely not rolling over for Bayern. La Dea play some of the most intense, chaotic, high-energy football in Europe, and at the Gewiss Stadium, they are a nightmare for any opponent. Bayern are Bayern — clinical, relentless, loaded with quality — but they’ve been known to slip up in Europe when they don’t take teams seriously. Don’t sleep on Atalanta making this very, very uncomfortable.

The short straw rating: 7/10 — Bayern are favourites, but this one could genuinely swing.

2. PSG vs Chelsea

The rematch nobody expected so soon. PSG and Chelsea met in the Club World Cup final last year — Chelsea winning 3-0 in what was one of the biggest upsets of that tournament. PSG will want revenge, and they’re playing at home first. Chelsea, still building under their new era, have been inconsistent in the Premier League but have flashes of genuine world-class quality. The tactical battle here will be elite, the drama will be inevitable, and the atmosphere at the Parc des Princes will be absolutely electric.

The short straw rating: 8/10 — high stakes, revenge mission energy, could go anywhere.

1. Real Madrid vs Man City — The Tie That Keeps Happening

Of course. Of course it’s these two. Real Madrid vs Manchester City has become the defining Champions League rivalry of this era. Madrid knocked City out in the last 16 last season. And the season before. And the season before that. City fans are haunted. Madrid fans expect magic. Haaland, with something to prove on the biggest stage. Mbappé, working his way back to fitness. Arbeloa trying to get the best out of a squad in transition. If you had to pick one tie that could produce the greatest 90 minutes of football this year, it’s this one.

The short straw rating: 10/10 — the most cursed, most compelling draw of the entire round. No debate.

The Final Verdict

Every team left in this tournament earned their spot — but some of them definitely earned a kinder draw. Newcastle fans have the dreamiest fixture to experience. City fans have the most traumatic. Spurs fans have the most absurd storyline. And somewhere in Norway, Bodø/Glimt are just happy to still be playing in March.
